Self compassion is being a loving and encouraging friend to yourself. It is honesty with tenderness. It is nurturing. Although it feels and commiserates with the ‘situation’ or ‘struggle’ at hand , it does not over – identify with it.
Self pity on the other hand is self indulgent to the point of making one lose perspective. self pity closes doors. It seals us off from finding a way to heal. it keeps us stuck in our misery.
Self compassion may allow us to ‘wallow’ a little, but doesn’t let us stay there, it opens the door to healing and moving on.
Self compassion looks inwards and in so doing frees us to move outwards. Self pity looks outwards and in so doing keeps us locked in.
